2021 is Tolpuddle at its truest and finest. A cool and wet season led to small, concentrated fruit. The wines have a certain intensity to them, earmark them for the cellar. Intense red berries, blackberry, bramble, fresh fennel and rhubarb. Fresh acidity and silty tannin. The winds of progress are blowing over the Tasmanian wine industry. The region is more and more in the public eye as climate change wreaks havoc across warmer regions, so the 2011 Michael Hill Smith and Martin Shaw's purchase of the Tolpuddle vineyard in Coal River Valley, was an exercise in excellent foresight. 20 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir nestled by a forest, made into wines that reflect the diversity of the site. Only in small amounts. If you are making your way through Australia's best examples of Chardonnay and Pinot, you cannot miss trying these.
