Praeter Winemaker Masterclass with Matt Large
Praeter Winemaker Masterclass with Matt Large

An intimate evening with Matt Large, the Nebbiolo devotee behind Praeter, who left one of Australian wine's top jobs to farm his own fruit.

Matt Large founded Praeter in 2018 to answer one question: what does Nebbiolo become in Australian soil and climate? He chased the answer across both hemispheres while making wine at some of the country's leading Chardonnay and Pinot Noir producers, including Tolpuddle Vineyard and Shaw and Smith, where he rose to Senior Winemaker. In 2024 he walked away from that role to farm grapes and focus on Praeter full-time. The 2025 harvest brought the label's first Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and its first wines from fruit Matt farmed himself. This masterclass catches Praeter at the start of that new chapter, including a pour of the already sold-out 2025 'Magpie Block' Chardonnay, from the dry-grown vineyard Matt farms organically in the foothills of the Mount Lofty Ranges.

Taste seven wines spanning Australia and Piedmont, from crisp whites through Nebbiolo to a Savagnin aged under flor and a bittersweet Chinato, guided by Matt himself.

  • 2026 Spring White
