Nebbiolo has a home outside of Barolo and Barbaresco, in the alpine mountains of Valtellina in northern Italy. Here, where the variety is known as Chiavennasca, is where you'll find Marchetti Maria Luisa. Maria’s family has been growing and selling grapes (nearly entirely Chiavennasca), but it wasn’t until the year 2000 that she opted to vinify the fruit herself. She was a schoolteacher in her early career, but her passion for organic viticulture and natural winemaking has compelled her into the life of full-time vigneron. The Tupich Rosso di Valtellina DOC is named for its incredibly steep vineyard. It sees Slavonian botti for 6 months before release. The Sant’Eufemia Valtellina Superiore DOCG sees 18 months in Slavonian botti.
