'Polish Hill River' Riesling 2024

Made by Andrew Kenny, senior winemaker at Pikes and Pike & Joyce, whose eponymous Clare Valley label has built its reputation on Riesling since launching in 2021. The fruit comes from the Smith family's vineyard in Polish Hill River, 450 metres above sea level, planted in 1979–80 on high, slatey red-brown clay and loam over limestone. Chill-pressed with free-run juice only, the wine is fermented with neutral yeast on fluffy lees, then bottled without fining or filtration to let the vineyard speak. Expect a pretty, delicate nose of pressed flowers, green apple, lemon pith and brine, with a tightly coiled palate of crushed shell, talc, sea salt and sweet fleshy lime. Sharp, clean and energetic, with crunchy acidity and a savoury edge, it's easy to enjoy young yet built with the structure to reward years in the cellar.
