Joh. Jos. Prüm, affectionately referred to as “JJ” by sommeliers across the globe, is hands down the most iconic producer of the Mosel. The wines have set a bar for intensity, complexity, and minerality, that other producers aim to adhere. The secret lies in their 13.5ha of prime vineyard sites. The vast majority of their vines are still planted on their own rootstocks and date over 60 years-old, with some up to 100. Grey and blue Devonian slate is the bedrock for all of their key vineyards. The difference between them lies more in their aspect, which ultimately has a profound effect on the final product. Multiple passes through the vineyards ensures that grapes are picked at optimal ripeness. The quality of the fruit is then matched with a purist and perfectionist approach in the winery. Long, slow fermentations and long lees ageing adds layers of depth to these stunning wines. Katharina Prüm is at the helm of her family’s estate today, which continues to soar unwaveringly.
