Perched on a granite-strewn ridge near Ballandean, around 1,000 metres above Queensland’s Severn River Valley, Hidden Creek is one of the highest vineyards in the Granite Belt. Established in 1995, the estate is mostly bush and boulders: of its 70 hectares, only around 2.5 are planted to vines, including Shiraz, Viognier and Tempranillo. Winemaker Andy Williams believes wholeheartedly in the region’s potential, and high-altitude Tempranillo has become one of its stars, with cool nights and granite soils giving freshness and fine structure. Made in a Spanish crianza style, with time in oak to add depth, this release offers black and red cherry, plum and cherry cola, with clove, cedar, leather and a hint of tobacco. Medium-bodied with bright acidity and fine, drying tannins, it’s a proud taste of Queensland wine.
