Envinate is a passion project founded by four friends who met while studying oenology in Alicante, Spain. Their shared philosophies on winemaking led them to collectively purchase a number of vineyards throughout Spain including in Ribera Sacra, Extremadura, and Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Their objective with this project is to showcase the personality of the vintage and the vineyard, most of which are old and abandoned. Concrete or old oak barrels are used during fermentation and a small amount of sulfur is added prior to bottling to protect the purity of the fruit.
It is their Tenerife wines that typically have sommeliers and consumers frothing for the next release. The ‘Benje’ vineyard sits at over a thousand meters above sea level, placing it above the cloud cover. As a result, the wines tend to be more rounded than their counterparts elsewhere on the island.
From the steep, terraced vineyards of Ribeira Sacra, Envínate’s 2023 ‘Seoane’ Mencía is a precise and expressive red that captures the rugged spirit of Galicia. Hand-harvested and spontaneously fermented with native yeasts, the grapes were aged in old oak to preserve freshness and the pure expression of the slate and granite soils. Aromas of red berries, delicate florals, and hints of graphite rise from the glass, leading to a medium-bodied palate with fine, polished tannins and lifted, mineral-driven acidity. Small production and careful, minimal-intervention winemaking make ‘Seoane’ a rare glimpse into the potential of Mencía from high-altitude, low-yield vineyards. The result is a wine that feels both elegant and grounded, offering a true sense of place from one of Spain’s most dramatic wine regions.
