Elio Altare is one of the revolutionary ‘modern’ pioneers of Barolo. He grew up on his family’s 5-hectare estate of orchards and vines in La Morra, Piedmont. His father was a staunch traditionalist. But, Elio had an innovative spirit; this, combined with an inspiring trip through Burgundy, led to Elio making drastic changes in the winery including temperature control, shorter macerations, and the addition of French oak barriques. These changes were a point of controversy for Elio and his father, and as a result of their disagreement Elio was disinherited from the farm. After years of hard work and perseverance, he eventually bought back the estate from his siblings, and went on to become a living a legend of the region. Today, Elio’s daughter Silvia is at the helm of their 10-hectare farm, where she maintains the style laid out by her father.
