'Virna' Rioja 2022

Based in Labastida in Rioja Alavesa, Spain, the project behind Dominio del Challao was launched by Argentine winemaker Manu Michelini with a focus on organic and minimal-intervention viticulture that reflects the region’s varied limestone and clay soils. The 2022 “Virna” is a village-level red made predominantly from Tempranillo with generous Garnacha and smaller amounts of Mazuelo, Viura and Garnacha Blanca, spontaneously fermented in concrete before extended ageing in used oak and concrete, resulting in a medium-bodied, lively Rioja with expressive red berry fruit, hints of herbs and orange peel, fine chalky tannins and a balanced, juicy texture that feels both elegant and approachable.
