Why we love this wine

In every family there is an outlier, no matter how close the family is and how much love and respect there may be. Blame it on the generational clash but Elio was the radical in the Altare family. His freedom of thinking and independent mind created revolution within the family business.

The family established a farm in La Morra in 1948 with Giovanni Altare at the helm, but it was his son Elvio that returned home after travelling to Burgundy and saw the future of the business lay within seeking elegance, finesse and supreme balance of their wines.

Sadly the rift between father and son was never mended with Giovanni dying in 1985 and disinheriting his son. It was not until Elvio’s daughter Silvia was transferred ownership in 2016 that Elvio’s vision and Silvia’s dedication to it finally found a place of peace.

Only indigenous yeasts are used and natural malolactic fermentation follows, no filtering or clarifying and barriques are the chosen fermentation vessel.

Rome wasn't built in a day. Elvio Altare wines are a result of hard work, family dedication and the quiet struggles that go with it.
