In 1171, Cistercian monks from the Zwettl monastery were granted their first vineyards in Austria’s Kamptal. Two of them, Heiligenstein and Gaisberg, remain the region’s oldest documented sites. More than 850 years later, Schloss Gobelsburg still farms both, now under Michael Moosbrugger, who believes the estate’s future lies in individuality and character rather than uniformity. Gaisberg sits just east of Heiligenstein, on crystalline slopes of gneiss, amphibolite and mica schist, and its Riesling terraces include some of the estate’s oldest vines. Classified Erste Lage (first growth), this Riesling is fermented and aged in large old Austrian oak casks. Expect citrus, apricot and white peach, with leafy and spicy notes and a stony, saline core, all on a bone-dry, finely tensioned palate with a long, mineral finish. It will age beautifully.
