Situated in a natural ampitheater, 610 meters above sea level, kissing the borders of a state forest, is family-run Cobaw Ridge. Founded in 1985 by married couple Allan and Nelly Cooper, the wines of Cobaw Ridge are a testament of elegance in one of Australia’s coolest wine growing regions, the Macedon Ranges. Focusing on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Lagrein (yes, I said Lagrein), the wines are made from 100% estate fruit, biodynamic farming, and hand-tended vines. Most wines see some form of oak barrique maturation, although typically no longer than 24 months and no more than 30% new in any given year. The words most often used in reviews to describe Cobaw Ridge are “alluring” “compelling” and “layered”. Their rosé is often cited as one of Australia’s best rosé wines.
