The reference point for Grower Champagne
When we think of grower champagne we think of a handful of leaders that grew the Récoltant manipulant classification. Récoltant manipulant essentially refers to a farmer who grows their own grapes in their own vineyards, makes and markets their own Champagne under their own label. Identified by RM noted on the bottle.
Egly-Ouriet is such a name.
Established in 1930 in the village of Ambonnay in Montagne de Reims the house style is powerful with a flavour intensity of high regard.
The average age of vines is 40+ years and the practice of harvesting at the optimum ripeness level is key.
The wines are dominated by Pinot Noir and base wines fermented in oak barriques to add richness and power. Lee’s ageing sits anywhere between 8 -12 months and dosage is at the lower end of the spectrum because that perfect balance is achieved with the ripeness of fruit.
Its testament to Francis Egly’s work that many of their cuvées have become flagship, its not simply one wine that Egly is known for but often a tossle between buyers over each release of bottling.
