Tessa Brown and partner Jeremy Schmölzer recognised the reputation for fine wine in North East Victoria early on. Their dream of their own vines and bottlings however was a waiting game. They planted their own vines into the ground in Beechworth and as they awaited the tiny vines to become viable, the duo created Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown.

The VS&B label launched in 2014 and has kept the pair busy ever since. All wines are handpicked and employ indigenous yeasts with the only addition being small amounts of sulfur as preservation.

The 2025 Barbera from Victoria’s King Valley is a lively, cool-climate red that combines vibrancy and elegance. This wine opens with bright cherry, raspberry, and red currant aromas, layered with violet florals and a hint of dried herbs. On the palate, it delivers juicy, fresh acidity balanced by fine, silky tannins, subtle baking spice, and a touch of blood orange zest. The mid-palate shows depth and concentration with a chalky, mineral undertone that lingers on the finish. Sourced from the Corsini family’s La Cantina vineyard, the fruit expresses pure varietal character with transparency and focus. Minimal intervention and organic practices ensure a wine that is approachable now but will also develop complexity with short-term cellaring.
