Livio Sassetti is the current custodian of the Sassetti estate in Montalcino, Tuscany. He worked the vineyards before purchasing 16ha in the 1970s, now known as Podere Pertimali. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, although not seeking certification. They produce 3 reds from this estate: a Brunello, a Brunello Riserva, and a Rosso di Montalcino. Sangiovese Grosso is the backbone and the body of the vineyard, and wines are aged in large Slovenian oak barrels. It’s rare to see reviewers from every corner of the market agree on a wine, but the Brunello from Sassetti has garnered praise from across the spectrum. The family has since purchased vineyards in Montecucco, Umbria from which they produce 2 reds, and Valdobbiadene, Veneto where they make a sparkling.
