Mayer 'Volcanic' Chardonnay 2024 — a distinctive, terroir‑driven Chardonnay from Timo Mayer in the Upper Yarra Valley, grown on volcanic soils, and crafted with minimal intervention.
Pale green‑gold in the glass, it opens with bright citrus — lemon drops, pink grapefruit — and floral touches of orange blossom. On the palate it’s lean, linear and mineral‑driven: crisp acidity, a gently chalky mid‑palate and a long, stony finish that evokes a restrained, Old‑World style.
Fermented in seasoned 300 L hogsheads (old oak) then rested without heavy manipulation (no heavy new oak, minimal intervention) — the result is pure, vineyard‑expressive Chardonnay, more aligned with Chablis than buttery New‑World style.
It’s a wine that will drink nicely now but should reward careful cellaring for a few years as it develops subtle depth and complexity.
