In the hamlet of Pouilly, beneath the dramatic limestone Rock of Solutré, stands a chapel dating back to the 14th century, and the family estate that takes its name. Domaine de la Chapelle is run by Catherine and Pascal Rollet, now joined by their son Thomas. They are best known for their Pouilly-Fuissé, including the prized Clos de la Chapelle, planted in 1921. The Solutré-Pouilly village designation is one of the southern Mâconnais’s best-kept secrets, sharing the same fossil-rich clay and limestone slopes as its more famous neighbour at a fraction of the price. This is classic southern Burgundy Chardonnay: white peach, pear, lemon zest and acacia blossom, with a chalky, mineral edge, bright acidity and a clean, gently creamy finish. It’s perfect as an aperitif or with seafood and roast chicken.
