High in the hills of Aragón, at close to 700 metres, the old vines of Almonacid de la Sierra produce some of Spain’s freshest and most charming Garnacha. Father and son Jesús and Jorge Navascués have championed this village through their family project. Jorge, who honed his craft at renowned estates such as Contino in Rioja, is now one of Spain’s most respected winemakers. Cutio, reportedly Aragonese for “skin,” is their celebration of Cariñena’s native grapes: mostly Garnacha with a splash of Cariñena. In 2024, the grapes were picked earlier for balance, extracted gently and aged for a year in concrete rather than oak, giving a pure, vibrant red. Expect cherry and strawberry, rosehip, dried flowers and soft herbs, with light, supple tannins and refreshing acidity. Serve slightly chilled, and pour it with lamb, chorizo or roast chicken.
