A varietal champion

Brother in arms, Matthew and Jonathan Hughes sought to create something of their own and found a plot of land which was just what they were searching for, a former cherry orchard with endless possibilities. They established Mewstone Vineyard in 2011 on the banks of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel located on the south-east of Tasmania, looking over Bruny Island.

A site is around 3.5 hectares the original plantings were of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah but have now expanded due to their huge swell in demand.

Hughes and Hughes wines has sought to fulfill the growing need of cool climate varietal specific wines.

The label bottles mostly purchased fruit from Southern Tasmania, this is Jonathan’s more experimental winemaking venture that seeks to satisfy his cravings for creativity and exploration.

Broken down into Living wines, Varietal wines and Single site wines the brand has developed a loyal following for its eclectic nature and small batch premium expression of fruit.

These are wines made with personality, trademarks of Tasmania’s cool climate with a keen eye for focus and detail.
