1993 was when Hervé Souhaut created his Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet with his superior sites in the northern Rhône and the southern Ardèche.
His sites are of tiny holdings with superb vines between 55-100 years in age on granitic soils. The AOC wines are released under his name and the Vin de Pays cuvées are named Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet.
The grapes are hand-harvested with whole bunches undergoing a pre-fermentation maceration. Natural yeast fermentation follows in wooden and concrete tanks. Fine lees aging is his preference in season oak for up to 12 months with no fining or filtration.
Viticulture is organic and natural winemaking techniques are employed. These wines capture the aromas of the soils and ancient landscape and truly represent his hands-on approach in the vineyard.
This is the next best thing to visiting the region, all served up in glass before your very nose.
