The redefinition of Mencia, in the hands of Verónica Ortega
A Spanish native, Verónica Ortega’s vintage experience in her developing years will make any wine fan's eyes water with envy. I'm talking, the cream of the crop! Alvaro Palacios, Burn Cottage, Benjamin Leroux and Comte Armand and to add insult to injury Domaine de la Romanee Conti! Yikes.
But the question is, can she make her own wine? The answer is Yes, yes she certainly can!
Her love of the Mencia grape brought her to Bierzo, Castilla y León, where she makes DO classified wine while also producing villages and single vineyard wines.
Organic farming on small plots with a mix of clay, sand, slate and limestone, the sites give her the ability to express Mencia in all its glory.
On 5 hectares of land in the delights of true continental climate Verónica Ortega was clearly paying attention in her globe trotting and now captures our attention with her minimal intervention approach to truly magnificent Mencia.
