The most western part of Colli Orientali del Friuli, the coolest and wettest part of the DOC, is home to Marco Sara. Farming 8ha of vineyards with 4ha of woods surrounding them, Marco believes in the importance of biodiversity to the overall health of his vines. He’s been farming organically since 2005, but didn’t start the certification process until 2011. In the winery, he is considered one of the ‘natural’ producers, but also believes in cleanliness of fruit and purity of terroir expression. He hopes to convey the identity of his vineyards through his wines. Hand harvests, spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts, vinification of single parcels in concrete or wooden tanks. Everything he does is deliberate with the intention of exemplifying craftsmanship and identity.
The ‘El Re Refosco Dal Penduncolo Rosso’ comes from vines aged 10-50 years, fermented in stainless steel and aged in 2nd – use oak barriques.
