Domaine Plageoles is often cited as having put the wine region of Gaillac on the map. Although one might argue that most people still don’t know where Gaillac is exactly (just northeast of Toulouse, in case you’re wondering), the point is taken. The 20ha estate is a pioneer of quality in a region where organics, hand-harvesting, and varietal bottling is little to none. The Plageoles family, having researched and invested in indigenous grapes over commercially appreciated varieties, has single-handedly brought back a number of native varieties from near extinction. They bottle individual varietals, which contradicts the laws of the appellation; so even after bringing fame to the region, they are not permitted to label their bottles with the Gaillac AOP.
