Clare Burder and Pete Allen are nothing if not refreshingly transparent about their goals as winemakers and viticulturists, and their current progress in reaching them. With just over 11 hectares of vines in Whitlands (technically King Valley), they are working towards organic viticulture. With high disease pressure and a couple years of La Niña rainfall, they haven’t been able to achieve it just yet. They also have a plan in place to operate at Net Zero by 2030.
The vineyard sits at 841m above sea level, the highest planted in Victoria. They operate a sparkling program as well as still wine. Their sparklings are made with the traditional Champagne method, with the traditional Champagne varieties (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Meunier). They typically see between 2.5 to 5 years of lees ageing, but in the case of the 2013 Late Disgorged Zero Dosage, it spent 8 whopping years on lees!
